Services
Proofreading
If you're just looking for a final check over to ensure your work is error free and ready for publication or submission then proofreading is the right choice for you. When proofreading your manuscript I'll check it for typos; spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage errors; formatting issues with alignment, images, and tables; and any other inconsistencies and flag them for you to fix. With Word and Google Docs this will be in comment boxes, PDFs and hardcopies will be marked-up visually and in the margins using standard proofreader's marks unless another system is agreed upon. This service is most suitable for manuscripts that are laid out in their final format.
Copy Editing
A step up from proofreading. When copy editing your manuscript I'll check for typos; spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage errors; and inconsistencies in the document. I'll make the corrections in the document directly using track changes (Word, Google Docs) and PDFs will be marked-up using call-out boxes. I'll ensure that documents are formatted in the correct style (e.g., APA, Chicago) and check the formatting and consistency of references in academic manuscripts. This service is most suitable for the final draft of manuscripts.
Stylistic Editing
Stylistic editing ensures that your document is tailored to your readers needs and expectations. When I preform a stylistic edit on your manuscript I'll check the construction of each sentence and paragraph for clarity, coherence, flow and language usage to ensure that they effectively convey your meaning in a clear, logical, and unambiguous way. I'll ensure that the reading level, language, and tone used throughout are appropriate for your intended readers and suit the purpose of the document. This service is most suitable for manuscripts that are nearly finished, but are not yet ready for publication or submission.
Structural Editing
Structural editing works on refining the organization and content of your document. What a structural edit will involve depends on what you need. If you are looking to meet length requirements I can revise and cut your material, or suggest where and how to expand it. If you're looking to enhance the organization and content of your document a structural edit may involve me making suggestions on how to reorganize sections for better flow of ideas, suggesting sections that need to be added to or removed from the document, or making suggestions on how to recast material that would be better presented in another format. This service is most suitable for early stage manuscripts that are still under development.
Line Editing
My most popular service and what most people need. Line editing is effectively a combination of stylistic editing and copy editing, but done at the same time. I'll look at the tone and phrasing of each sentence and the flow between sentences and paragraphs to ensure that consistency and effective writing throughout the manuscript and I'll make changes as necessary. I'll also correct any spelling or grammar issues in the manuscript. This service is most suitable for the final draft of manuscripts.
